Breaking news: Simon Ekpa Rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s Directive to End Sit-at-Home in the Southeast

In a recent interview on 90MinutesAfrica, hosted by Rudolf Okonkwo, Finland-based separatist agitator Simon Ekpa declared that he would not obey the directive of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to end the ongoing sit-at-home exercise in Nigeria’s southeast region.

Simon Ekpa, who styles himself as the "Prime Minister of the Biafra Government in Exile," stated, “I will only consider his instructions if he comes to Finland and speaks to me face to face.” He further added, “Even if he is released today and gives this directive from Nigeria, I will not comply.”

This stance contrasts sharply with Nnamdi Kanu's message in July 2023. Through his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu had unequivocally instructed Ekpa and others to cease all sit-at-home activities. Kanu emphasized that anyone continuing to enforce the directive was not acting on his behalf.

Ekpa defended his position by asserting that the sit-at-home strategy was vital for achieving Biafra’s independence. He claimed it had significantly impacted Nigeria’s economy and governance in the southeast, effectively showcasing the region's resistance to the Nigerian authorities.

Highlighting his broader approach, Ekpa described the sit-at-home exercise as one of four mechanisms being employed to achieve Biafra's independence. The other strategies include political lobbying, diplomatic efforts, and self-defense. “These methods are working perfectly to delegitimize the Nigerian state in Biafra land,” he said.

While acknowledging the criticisms of the economic and educational toll the sit-at-home order imposes on residents, Ekpa argued that the sacrifices were necessary for future gains. "Freedom is costly," he stated. “Traders will eventually have better businesses, and students will attend improved schools. These sacrifices are part of the price for a better future.”

The enforcement of the sit-at-home order has been controversial, with many southeastern residents lamenting its disruptive impact on daily life and economic activities. Human rights activists and political leaders have called for its suspension, citing its detrimental effects on the region's development.

Despite mounting opposition, Simon Ekpa remains resolute in his position, deepening the division within the pro-Biafra movement over strategy and leadership.
